Detours or…


Discovering Marconi

This morning whilst the weather was still decent I headed down the road to go to Salvan as I had a question and the mayor’s office is only open on Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoons.  Although unable to settle my particular request it did lead to my taking a walk.

One that I should have done years ago, but somehow never got around to doing.
Salvan is where Guglielmo Marconi achieved his first experiments in the wireless transmission of sound.

There is a walk that one can take to the various rocks and sites used for this purpose and if it hadn’t been for the parcoursvita (a sort of path that combines various exercise elements for strength, endurance and flexibility) that was halfway around, it truly would have taken only 30 to 40 minutes, as advertised.

Imagine the longest distance he achieved was in between Salvan and the small village where I rent in the summers Les Marécottes. The fall colors are going to be much better than in “normal” years, thanks to the extreme heat and lack of rain this past summer – there are even some reds!

All goes to show that even the tiniest of villages or spots also have their own interest or claim to fame. The church also has a wooden plaque honoring the Swiss chef that went down with the Titanic.

Globalization or…


Chinese in the Swiss Alps!
 
So although my landlord’s birthday was a couple of weeks ago we hadn’t had time to celebrate properly, i.e. my inviting her to lunch, until I returned.
The choice was difficult and finally settled by flipping a coin: twice as the first time we couldn’t remember what the side that turned up represented (now, now, we are both sound of mind, just laughing and not thinking to concentrate!) so had to do it again. It turned out to be the new Chinese restaurant in Salvan.

Now here is a great discovery: an excellent Chinese restaurant in the Swiss Alps! China House, Place Centrale 28 – 1922 Salvan 027 761 30 10 or 079 30 90 434. 11:30 to 14:30 and from 18:00. All day Saturday and Sunday. Take out or eat in.

The daily menu had a choice of two mains: either Pekin duck or spicy chicken. Both came with a salad first followed by a spring roll and all of it was delicious: the salad was one of the freshest that I have tasted in a restaurant, the spring roll was piping hot and freshly fried so I suspect that it was hand made and rolled as well and the mains again very hot (unusual for restaurant fare so perhaps I should enquire as to how they do it). 

To round off the meal I had an expresso and she a litchi fruit salad. From start to finish a most enjoyable meal: even the décor was an interesting mix of old pictures from the area and the odd more oriental scroll – it all worked together. Our waitress was of Chinese descent and called us “girls” and the men “boys” – she too added to the experience especially as her French was perfect (would love to hear her story someday as it is rather unusual to find someone of oriental descent so fluent in a foreign language and above all in an out-of-the-way spot like Salvan, VS).

More fun in the village, or…


Mill festival.

As noted in my blog (originally typed "bog", hmmm... am I making a remark about my own writing?) about the fulsome neighbourhood festival last Saturday in the village, the lack of inhabitants in some of the smaller villages certainly doesn’t mean a lack of enthusiasm and energy for festivals.

Last Sunday, it was the turn of the “neat”, “refined” or “fine” mill – “Moulin Fine” – to show off.
Researching a bit I discovered that the “Fine” has absolutely nothing to do with the adjectives that I have cited above, but was, rather, the name of its former owner – François Décaillet, commonly called “Fine”. 
The history itself is that of a cereal mill, which had its ups and downs (for those of you who can read French, the web-site gives many fascinating details: http://www.moulinfine.ch/



A foundation duly constituted in 1988 undertook the reconstitution of the mill, which was first opened again in 1992 (they date the original mill back to the Middle Ages, but as the foundation puts it “it slept more than it worked” and was a very off and on type of enterprise.  Other renovations and it opened more or less for good in 2009. In 2014 though they had to replace the wooden water wheel itself, so it is an on-going work of love for traditions that keep it in place.

But back to our festival: this functioning flourmill is open to the public the second Sunday of the month during the “good” (read summer although we have had precious little of that this year!) season with this most recent one being the “cereal market”.

The cereals were brought up from the valley via the old stagecoach road (linking the Valais in Switzerland to Chamonix in France, it is thought that it served quite often various robbers in the area: a quick way to get over the mountain after committing larceny in Switzerland) by a family from Mex and their two donkeys.


Stopping first in Old Salvan so that they, and we, could enjoy some of the traditional dances put on by the “Vieux Salvan”, then down the road in a joyous band (with the organiser repeating every few minutes: “the roads are open, please be careful, particularly of your children as the cars are also coming through”. I noted that most were from out of state and had worried looks on their faces). There was an opportunity to buy bread made from last month’s ground flour as well.






Once at the mill (I was with very smart locals so we reached the few tables first and staked out a spot in the shade), it was party time. On offer, grilled meats including the ever-present sausages, raclette, and platters of the local dried meats and cheeses, all accompanied by your drink of choice, red, white, yellow (beer) with the occasional bottle of water or soda.

Throughout the two millers relayed each other in giving explanations – one could actually watch them grinding the cereal that had been brought up.





– and an accordionist made things even livelier.

 
All in all – another great way to spend a day.

The beauty of enthusiasm…


Or how to stay young.

I have just spent three days showing my childhood friend and her husband various tourist sights/sites close to my home (about a two-hour radius).

Ah, the fun:  although both are experienced travelers, having even been many places that I have yet to see, this area was new to them. The boundless enthusiasm for what they were seeing, the joy with which each new feature was greeted, made it an ever so pleasant change for jaded me. Or perhaps I should say that, that which we regularly enjoy – over time – becomes ordinary.

I love Gruyères and will happily take any and all visitors there, but it is fascinating to see how each new introduction leads to an entirely different appreciation of beloved spots. Seen through the eyes of someone seeing if for the first times adds a dimension as their view is always slightly different depending upon experience and interests.

Then it was up to my mountain flat and although the weather changed and the “rains came down”, it was still beautiful in their eyes, being new.

I will try and remember the lesson: if one is open to new sights, new tastes, new cultures and new experiences, one remains young in spirit (o.k. so both of them are also in better physical shape than I currently as I haven’t been up to my usual hiking due to a sprained ankle earlier in the summer), always entertained, and more importantly always interesting to others. Curiosity and enthusiasm coupled with a willingness to experience that, which is different, will always endure one to others.
